What Rolling Mill Bearing Buyers Should Confirm Before Requesting a Quote

For a standard bearing, a model number and quantity may be enough to obtain a preliminary price. Rolling mill bearings are different. Many models are large, application-specific or supplied with special clearance, precision and ring arrangements.

If an inquiry contains only a short bearing number, suppliers may quote different technical configurations under what appears to be the same product. Buyers can avoid this problem by preparing a technical and commercial checklist before requesting a final quote.

1. Is the Bearing Number Complete?

Copy the designation exactly as it appears on the bearing. Include suffixes and markings from the inner rings, outer rings and spacers. A complete designation gives suppliers a consistent basis for comparison.

2. Are the Dimensions and Ring Arrangement Confirmed?

Provide the bore, outside diameter and total width, but also confirm the number and width of separate rings and spacers. For FC, FCD and FCDP designs, a cross-section drawing is preferable. The quotation should state whether the offer includes a complete matched bearing set.

3. What Radial Internal Clearance Is Required?

Mounting fits and operating temperature change the clearance available during operation. Ask the maintenance or engineering team for the original clearance specification, measured unmounted clearance or required mounted clearance.

If that information is unavailable, provide shaft and housing fits, operating temperature, speed, load and the previous designation. A quotation stating only “standard clearance” may be insufficient for a rolling mill position.

4. What Precision Requirement Applies?

Confirm whether the original drawing specifies a precision class, ring runout, roller-group tolerance or another inspection value. The supplier should reference the agreed requirement in the quotation or technical confirmation.

5. Are the Cage and Lubrication Details Correct?

Confirm cage material and design, lubrication method, oil-hole position and groove arrangement. These details must correspond with the existing housing and lubricant supply path.

6. What Documents Are Required?

• Dimensional inspection report

• Radial clearance report

• Material or heat-treatment certificate

• Hardness report

• Precision or runout inspection record

• Country-of-origin document

• Packing list and pre-shipment photos

Not every order requires every document. Agreeing the required records before production allows the supplier to include the inspection scope in the offer.

7. Is the Lead Time for Production or Shipment?

For large or non-stock rolling mill bearings, distinguish among stock availability, drawing approval, production, inspection and transportation. A clear dispatch date is more useful than a general lead-time statement.

8. Is the Packing Suitable for the Route?

Large bearings need protection against moisture, impact and movement during transport. Confirm rust-preventive treatment, moisture-proof wrapping, internal fixing and reinforced wooden cases where required.
