Spherical Roller Bearings for Heavy Loads and Misalignment

Spherical roller bearings combine high load capacity with self-aligning capability. Their two rows of barrel-shaped rollers run on a common spherical outer-ring raceway, allowing the bearing to accommodate shaft deflection and moderate mounting misalignment while carrying heavy radial load and axial load in both directions.

This combination makes spherical roller bearings common in conveyors, crushers, vibrating screens, paper machinery, industrial fans, mining equipment and heavy gearboxes. They are especially valuable where a long shaft, flexible frame or difficult housing alignment makes perfect concentricity unrealistic.

Self-alignment does not eliminate every installation problem. Excessive misalignment changes internal load distribution, increases friction and can damage seals or cages. Bearing selection should still consider load, speed, shaft deflection, housing accuracy and operating temperature. For tapered-bore bearings mounted with an adapter sleeve, the drive-up distance or measured reduction in radial clearance must be controlled carefully. Pushing the bearing too far can remove necessary running clearance.

Open spherical roller bearings are often used with external seals and relubrication systems. Sealed versions can help retain grease and exclude contaminants where space and speed permit. W33 lubrication grooves and holes, cage design, internal clearance and tapered or cylindrical bore are important suffix details; the base number alone may not define the required bearing.
