BWK bearing

An open four-row tapered roller bearing and a sealed version can serve similar roll-neck applications while requiring different lubrication and maintenance arrangements. For a rolling mill buyer, the choice should begin with how the bearing operates inside the chock. A seal is part of that system, rather than a feature that can be assessed independently of the installation.

Water, scale and other contaminants make bearing protection a practical concern in mill service. Sealed designs can add a barrier close to the bearing and help retain lubricant. Open bearings depend on the protection and lubricant supply provided by the surrounding arrangement. Both require a properly specified installation; a sealed bearing is not a remedy for damaged chock seals or uncontrolled contamination elsewhere in the system.

The maintenance method is an important difference to establish before ordering. Some sealed four-row designs have particular relubrication provisions, while others are supplied in configurations that are not intended for relubrication. Never transfer the maintenance instruction for one design to another just because both are described as sealed. Confirm the supplied grease, any replenishment route, inspection requirements and replacement procedure against the exact product documentation.

Changing from an open bearing to a sealed version also requires a review of the available space and associated components. Compare the full assembly dimensions, seal clearances, lubricant routes and surrounding parts. The intended load and operating conditions still need assessment. A bearing with the same nominal bore should not be accepted as a conversion proposal until the chock arrangement has been checked.

In a purchasing enquiry, separate the goals of an exact replacement from those of a sealing upgrade. For an exact replacement, provide the complete bearing reference and the identification of supplied assembly components. For an upgrade discussion, add the chock drawing, operating speed, loads where known, exposure to water and the current lubrication practice. Explain the maintenance problem being addressed, rather than asking only for a bearing described as longer-lasting.

BWK welcomes rolling mill bearing enquiries based on the original assembly information and equipment requirements. Identify whether the request is for an open or sealed four-row tapered roller bearing, and state the required scope of supply. Any proposed change to sealing or lubrication should be reviewed for the specific arrangement. A well-defined enquiry makes the quotation more useful and helps the maintenance team evaluate what the replacement will require in service.
