Four-row cylindrical roller bearings are widely used on rolling-mill work rolls, intermediate rolls and backup rolls because they carry heavy radial loads in a compact radial space. However, the bearing does not work independently from the roll neck. The fit between the inner ring and roll neck directly affects the bearing's mounted clearance, running temperature and load distribution.
For this reason, a replacement should not be described only as “the same FC or FCD size.” The required fit—interference, clearance or tapered-bore mounting—must match the original roll-neck design and service conditions.
When an inner ring is mounted with interference, it expands slightly. That expansion reduces the radial internal clearance available inside the bearing. A clearance fit has less effect on the mounted clearance, but it must still provide stable support and avoid creep under load.
The final operating clearance is influenced by the initial bearing clearance, ring interference, roll-neck diameter, housing fit, temperature difference and rolling load. A bearing can therefore have the correct external dimensions but still run poorly if its fit is not correct.
Interference fits are commonly selected where the inner ring must remain firmly positioned on the roll neck under heavy rolling load, shock and repeated reversals. The secure fit helps prevent relative movement between the ring and shaft seat.
Before using an interference-fit bearing, the mill team should confirm the specified initial clearance and the actual roll-neck tolerance. Excessive interference can leave too little operating clearance after mounting, increasing friction and temperature. Insufficient interference may allow ring creep, fretting or damage to the roll-neck seat.
Clearance-fit arrangements are used where the roll-neck design requires easier mounting and removal, or where the bearing's internal arrangement is designed for that fit. They can make roll changes more convenient, but the bearing still needs accurate seating and reliable axial location.
A clearance fit should not be assumed simply because a bearing is easier to install. Confirm the original drawing, ring arrangement and service history. If a bearing repeatedly moves on the roll neck or shows fretting marks, the fit and load conditions need to be reviewed before another replacement is fitted.

Rising operating temperature, polished or fretted areas on the bore, dark discoloration, ring movement, uneven roller-row wear or recurring clearance-related failures can all indicate that the bearing fit requires attention. These signs should be assessed together with lubrication, roll-neck geometry and housing condition.
