When an old rolling mill bearing is difficult to source, buyers often begin by sending three dimensions: bore diameter, outside diameter and width. These dimensions are essential, but they are not enough to confirm that another bearing can replace the original one.
A bearing with the same d × D × B dimensions may fit into the chock and onto the roll neck, yet still perform differently in service. Small differences in internal construction can affect load distribution, operating clearance, running accuracy and maintenance life.
Record every letter, number and suffix marked on the rings, spacers and original packaging. Suffixes may identify internal clearance, precision class, cage design, ring arrangement, lubrication features, material treatment or a manufacturer-specific design.
For large FC, FCD and FCDP bearings, provide clear photographs of all markings. If a marking is incomplete, include the original drawing, equipment manual or previous purchase record.
Four-row cylindrical roller bearings are produced in several ring and flange arrangements. The number of inner and outer rings, loose-flange positions, cage arrangement and separability of components may differ.
These differences influence mounting, axial displacement and maintenance during roll changes. A replacement must match the roll-neck arrangement and the locating or non-locating function of the original position.
The effective clearance changes after mounting and again when the mill reaches operating temperature. An interference fit can reduce initial clearance, while temperature differences between the rings and surrounding components can reduce it further.
If operating clearance is too small, the bearing may run hot. If it is too large, load sharing between the roller rows may become unstable. Clearance should therefore be confirmed from the original requirement or actual fit, speed, load, temperature and lubrication conditions.
Bearing runout and dimensional accuracy can influence vibration, strip thickness and surface quality, especially in cold rolling and finishing stands. A standard-precision bearing is not automatically an acceptable replacement for a higher-precision design.
Cage type affects roller guidance and suitability for speed, impact and lubrication conditions. If the original bearing carries a stabilization, case-hardening or other special designation, include it in the inquiry.
Oil passages in the bearing, chock and housing must align correctly. A replacement with different lubrication holes or grooves may restrict lubricant supply even when its main dimensions match. For sealed designs, confirm the seal type and position; for open bearings, review the external sealing arrangement.

A replacement bearing should be approved from the complete designation, internal structure, drawing and operating conditions—not from three dimensions alone.
