C3 is one of the most searched bearing suffixes, but it is also one of the most frequently misunderstood. C3 does not mean higher precision or automatically better quality. It means the bearing has greater radial internal clearance than the normal clearance class, commonly called CN.

Internal clearance is the small amount of movement available between the rolling elements and raceways before installation. Once the inner ring is pressed onto a shaft, the outer ring is fitted into a housing and the machine reaches operating temperature, that clearance normally becomes smaller. A larger initial clearance can therefore be useful when interference fits, high speed or a temperature difference between the inner and outer rings would otherwise create excessive preload.

Electric motors often use C3 deep groove ball bearings because the shaft fit and operating heat can reduce clearance. However, “motor bearing equals C3” is not a universal rule. A bearing with too much remaining clearance may increase noise, vibration or loss of positioning accuracy in lightly loaded or precision equipment. A bearing with too little running clearance may overheat, smear or fail prematurely.

Before replacing CN with C3—or C3 with CN—check the complete bearing designation, original equipment specification, shaft and housing fits, speed, load, temperature and lubrication. If the old bearing failed, do not assume clearance was the only cause. Misalignment, contamination, incorrect grease volume, electrical erosion and installation damage can produce similar symptoms.

When requesting a BWK quotation, include the full suffix, not only the base number. “6205” is not the same purchasing specification as “6205-2RS-C3.” Confirming seals, shields and clearance at the inquiry stage is a simple way to prevent expensive installation errors.
