A failed bearing is rarely an isolated component problem. It can damage a shaft, housing, seal, gear or motor and turn a low-cost replacement into hours of lost production. The fastest way to reduce bearing downtime is to identify the failure mechanism instead of repeatedly installing the same replacement.
The most common causes include insufficient lubrication, excessive grease, wrong lubricant viscosity, contamination, misalignment, incorrect shaft or housing fit, overload, electrical erosion and careless mounting. Warning signs often appear before total failure: rising temperature, changing vibration, rumbling, clicking, grease leakage, metallic particles or abnormal shaft play.
The damage pattern provides useful clues. Blue or dark discoloration can indicate excessive heat. Rust, dents and abrasive marks may point to moisture or particle contamination. Smearing and scoring can occur when the lubricant film is inadequate. Repeated marks spaced at rolling-element intervals may result from impact during installation or false brinelling during transport. Fluting on motor bearings can be associated with electrical current passing through the bearing.
Prevention starts before installation. Keep the work area and tools clean, verify shaft and housing dimensions, apply mounting force to the ring being fitted and never transfer hammer force through the rolling elements. Use the specified grease type and quantity; more grease is not always safer. After startup, establish a baseline for temperature, sound and vibration so later changes are easier to recognize.
When asking a supplier to help analyze a failed bearing, send the full bearing designation, application, speed, load, operating hours, lubrication record and clear photos of both raceways and rolling elements. BWK can use this information to narrow the likely cause and confirm whether a different seal, clearance or bearing type should be considered.
