2RS vs ZZ vs Open Bearings: Which Seal Type Should You Choose?

The difference between an open bearing, a ZZ bearing and a 2RS bearing can determine whether a machine runs reliably or fails after contamination enters the raceway. These suffixes describe protection on both sides of the bearing, but they do not provide the same sealing performance or friction level.

An open bearing has no integral shield or seal. It offers easy access for external lubrication and can suit clean housings, oil-lubricated gearboxes and applications where the machine already provides effective sealing. It should not be exposed directly to dust or water.

ZZ usually indicates metal shields on both sides. Shields create a narrow non-contact or low-contact gap, helping retain grease and block larger particles while keeping friction and heat relatively low. They are commonly selected for electric motors, fans and higher-speed equipment in reasonably clean environments.

2RS generally indicates rubber seals on both sides. Contact or low-contact sealing provides stronger protection against dust, splash and moisture, making 2RS bearings useful in agricultural machinery, conveyors and general equipment. The trade-off can be slightly higher friction and a lower limiting speed than a comparable shielded bearing. Exact suffix conventions vary by manufacturer, so confirm the technical specification instead of relying only on familiar letters.

Do not choose the seal in isolation. Check speed, temperature, lubricant, shaft surface, pressure difference and whether relubrication is required. A sealed-for-life bearing is convenient, but once grease degrades it may need complete replacement.
